The IAI Flex Class is a socially dynamic, weekly lesson in which students learn, experience, and “flex” one specific skill from our Innate Acting Matrix.
This class prioritizes individual elements of our acting system, focusing on exercises and explorations that propel the instrument towards greater awareness and flexibility.
Participating in our Flex Class strengthens the ownership of your instrument and gets you deeply in touch with the spectrum of your humanity.
Flex Class is designed to be accessible to anyone looking to expand their acting toolkit. Each week, you'll walk away with a new pattern or exercise that is guaranteed to evolve your craft.
Flex Class is a great way for our Master Class actors to supplement their training regimen. Participating in both Flex Class and Master Class grants you extra time on your feet, thereby fast-tracking your ownership of your craft.
We define accessibility as: the abstract measurement of how much organic humanity a person has available to them when under social or professional pressure. For example, when one is on-camera for an interview, how much of their humanity is available and flowing to the audience? Are they self-conscious in a way that jams them up, or are they open and expressive? We as the audience are instinctively drawn to the latter; we want to watch people who are comfortable in their own skin. Therefore, we as as actors must learn to be accessible in our work.
When the audience can identify with you as the character in the situation, that is, when they can see themselves, parts of themselves, or even people they know, they are much more likely be interested, onboard, and to join you on your journey. Therefore, great actors must study and deeply understand those elements of the performance that create identifiability.
When your instrument has been trained to deliver full-spectrum humanity, the audience will sense that there is so much more to you than what's on the surface. They see you not as an actor doing a scene but as a fully-formed human having a captivating experience. This is depth, and it is found in the truly great and enduring actors.
We like what we know. The sooner we understand a character, the sooner we can enjoy watching them. Even if a character is doing bad things, if we as the audience understand why they do what they do with absolute clarity, we tend to be attracted to that clarity. Thus, a great actor is a clear actor.
Foundational ideas upon which craft and psychology can be built and strengthened
Unique social exercises and practices that allow our actors to take ownership of their humanity and delve deeper into who they are, as the character in the situation
Much like any other sport or performing art, we believe there is no shortcut to greatness; it must be earned. With your dedication and creativity, and our practice tools and methodologies, we truly believe Innate Acting is possible, in fact, it's inevitable!
Short Opening Lecture
Archetype Drill
Each student secretly picks an Archetype and performs an exercise that has been specifically created by our coaching team to train social acuity. This exercise is a modified form of improv in which each actor, as their Archetype, articulates the specific human element that is in play in that particular moment. The purpose of this drill is for the actor to acutely interact, assess, and express themselves, utilizing the social sensibilities of their chosen Archetype.
The rest of class tries to guess the performing actor's chosen Archetype.
The goal of this exercise is clarity; if the class is able to correctly guess your chosen Archetype, that means you were socially clear and, therefore, successful in your delivery of that Archetype.
Scene Work
You'll be given a scene and character and asked to determine which archetype(s) you believe best fit(s) that character. You will then practice the Archetype Drill as the Archetype/character in the situation.
You'll then populate your script with the human elements that emerged from the Archetype Drill and practice these elements with the scene.
The goal here is experiential practice. We're effectively training your instrument to subconsciously embody these human elements. Our proprietary on-script practice methodology, which we will demonstrate in-class, ensures this outcome.
Live Work
Witnessing and experiencing the benefits of our practice, each actor will perform their scene with the rest of class watching for the chosen Archetypes.
The goal here is twofold: clarity and objective observation. We want our performing actors to be clear in the delivery of their chosen Archetypes. We also want our observing actors to be watching the work of others for specific elements of the craft. This assessment affords them both an advanced articulation of the craft and an increased awareness of the demands of a successful and enduring career.
Each Flex Class will provide a curricular pathway that will cover a specific area of the craft. Our goal is to inspire an overall dynamism and freedom that our Flex Class actors will experience and evolve over time.
