What is an Innate Audition?

Innateness is the creative state in which the performer’s instrument operates naturally and fluidly; everything that is needed for a given performance finds its way in and happens effortlessly.

When one is truly innate in their audition, there is a trust that takes over and inspires the work. It is an earned ability, a mastery that comes from an efficient and time-tested preparation process. Great performers across all disciplines possess and trust this unique ability to prepare their work at the highest and most competitive level.

The IAS solves one of the most demanding aspects of acting.

What makes auditioning challenging?

It is often very difficult for actors, without the right kind of specific knowledge, training, and preparation, to create a path from artistic survival mode to a place of creative ownership… especially with auditions.

Time Pressure: Typically, you will need to prepare, tape, and submit your audition in a tight time-window. Additionally, when auditions come out of the blue, it is often necessary to re-prioritize and adjust your schedule to meet the arbitrary deadlines that are set by casting.

The Unprepared Reader: Typically, the reader you will be working with in an audition will be unprepared. This results in much less humanity coming your way. In this case, it is challenging to deliver a full and responsive human experience for casting.

Performing in Space: Some of what you are asked to create in an audition is real, but most of the necessary elements are conceptual. The auditioning experience is full of abstracts and missing pieces (e.g. falling in love with someone you don’t actually love, hiding from a dinosaur, sound effects, laugh tracks, etc.).

Drastically Different Demands: No two characters, scenes, or productions are identical. In fact, typically there are vast differences between the things you will be asked to create, the characters you are asked to portray, and the environments in which you will be asked to work.

Given these, and the many more unique challenges that exist for the auditioning actor, we have developed and implemented an auditioning workflow and curriculum that directly addresses these challenges.

For many years, we tested, developed and refined a variety of methods for solving the aforementioned “Auditioning Challenges.” A natural and eventual by-product of our work, the Innate Audition Solution was born.

By utilizing time-tested ideals, and creating functional processes that lead to ownership, we have developed methodologies that inspire flexibility in both practice and preparation.

Not unlike scales for a musician, footwork drills for an athlete, or forms for a martial artist, our Innate Audition Solution is a sequential workflow that, once mastered, creates the elements that are essential for preparing, performing, and submitting winning auditions. This unique and structured process is counter-intuitive in that its structure and repeatability is the very thing that fosters flexibility, freedom, and believability.

The actor who is well-coached to mastery of the Innate Audition Solution can confidently grow, calibrate, and correlate their instrument and their craft.

With repetition and diligence, the actor’s auditions (both their preparation and submitted performance) naturally evolve from predominantly conscious to predominantly subconscious. That's when you really begin to own your auditions; that's innateness.
